What to consider when creating your Android app
It´s too new to rely on your resources alone – Find yourself a specialist
The problem starts when a company decides to build an Android app. This is because the expertise in the company may not even stretch to basic design features of app products. To put it another way, a company that may be successful in many areas does not necessarily know how best to present itself on a mobile device. So it often happens that app development is outsourced or consulted upon before the first line of code is created.
Decide - Mobile website or full-function app?
The very first thing you need to think about is whether or not you just want a mobile version of your company website or a fully functioning app that will stand on its own in the app market. If you are going to make a utility or game, for example, be prepared to just build dedicated apps for the various platforms. If you want to build a mobile version of your website, make a more flexible construction that can be read on many different devices.
Design for Touch, especially for Android Devices
Touch technology is so widely used nowadays that your design has to take this factor into account. When it comes to Android phones, you may need to ask your designers to think carefully about the fact that the touch-target field (the space that will accept touch from a user's finger) may well be less than one centimeter. If this is the case, you need to develop your app so that some users are not hampered just because they have a particular device.
Bear in mind also that the thumb is the most-used digit when someone is utilizing a mobile device one-handed. People often use a device with one hand, and this means the thumb needs to be taken into account in your design spec. Again, with Android phones, you need to know how this affects the touch experience.
Make the interface magic
This is where so many apps fall apart. Designers make an app that is pretty much ‘one size fits all’ when it comes to the UI. The UI is key, and this doesn't just mean where you place your finger to make things happen. Make it attractive but also very easy to navigate. If someone can find stuff on the UI easily, they will use it again. Also, make your UI something that starts to remember commands. Do this, and people will come back for more. If you don’t believe us, just think of the last time your app didn’t remember your password.
So there are just a few areas in which you can focus your development time most effectively when putting together an Android app. The variance in screens and UIs is definitely something to think about, as is the decision to make an app in the first place, rather than a copy of your website.
